The Department of Sociology at Christ University is committed to academic excellence, critical inquiry, and transformative education in the field of Sociology. Established as part of the University's vision to promote socially engaged scholarship and its commitment to the social sciences, the department offers a vibrant space for students and faculty to explore the complexities of society through interdisciplinary, comparative, and contemporary lenses.
Rooted in the core values of academic integrity, inclusivity, and social responsibility, the department offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, fostering intellectual growth, professional development, along with an emphasis on social sensitivity. With its commitment to a strong theoretical grounding, service learning, community engagement, and empirical research, the curriculum is regularly updated to reflect emerging global and national sociological discourses.
The department initiates programmes that cater to the emerging needs of the various stakeholders in society. It undertakes research projects, consultancies, intervention programmes, and extension activities, organises seminars, workshops, rural exposure camps and field work as part of its curriculum. The value of learning through service is significantly incorporated into the academic programmes. The department’s approach towards teaching, learning, and assessment focuses on active learning and is learner-centred and inquiry-driven, blending lectures, fieldwork, research, internships, and participatory research. The department also has a vibrant student-led association that engages in activities aligned with its focus areas. These together help the department to work towards Whole Person Education. The faculty comprises experienced scholars with diverse specialisations, including gender studies, urban sociology, development studies, migration, education, and environmental sociology.

Our mission is to nurture our students to enable them to become responsible citizens with a global perspective through critical academic and field engagements. This enables them to inculcate 21st-century skills and contribute towards social change and sustainable development. This mission is of utmost importance today as we work with learners in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and unpredictable environment.
The discipline of Sociology provides critical insights into social dynamics, the structures underlying social injustices, promotes social change, informs policy and practice, enhances well-being, and tackles global challenges. Sociology provides valuable perspectives, knowledge, and skills to navigate and address the complex social challenges of our time, to nurture learners who can work towards building a more equitable and inclusive society for all.
The Department offers multidisciplinary undergraduate programmes and a postgraduate programme in Applied Sociology. We also offer a Doctoral programme in Sociology. We focus on holistic learning, and the teaching and learning strategies used reflect this focus. Our students engage with experiential learning and benefit from our numerous collaborations with educational institutions worldwide, as well as our associations with the Government and Non-government organisations. This has contributed to the development of a dynamic alumni body committed to the betterment of the department, institution, and the organisations and communities they work with while reinforcing the relevance of the discipline in the world today.
Our highly qualified, experienced, and committed faculty members at the Bangalore Central Campus have a strong passion for teaching and research and contribute to the overall academic community. Our department is committed to providing the highest standard of academic excellence, even as we pursue the larger goal of whole-person education and nurture future citizens who are socially sensitive, aware, and responsible.
